Peter Mark was Founding Artistic Director and conductor 2011-2013.
The mission of Lyric Opera Virginia was to present fresh and accessible formats appealing to both new and seasoned opera goers -- thereby expanding the reach as well as the growth and sustain ability of Opera. At a time when pressures on the performing arts are causing distress to many institutions around the country, LOV aimed to increase opera’s accessibility to general audiences with its variety of presentations in many new venues for the enjoyment of opera throughout the Commonwealth.
Jewel Box Opera: Opera for the 21st Century
Peter Mark conceived of LYRIC OPERA VIRGINIA as a company introducing opera to new audiences as a means of complementing and increasing opera audiences for the 21st Century. 'Jewel Box Opera' productions of no more than 90-minutes in length with no intermission were created for performing forces as large as 4 principals, 8 ensemble singers, and an orchestra of 13 -- for Bizet's CARMEN -- and as small as 2 principal singers, piano and violin -- for Gounod's ROMEO & JULIET. The major storyline and music of each opera can then be presented with focused production elements in a variety of intimate halls and venues at reduced length, cost, and formality, delivering the essence of each opera to new and broader audiences who don't currently attend full opera productions.
